BPS is accepted into Indiana Literacy Cadre

By Angela Cornell staff Writer

BREMEN — Jill Hassel, the curriculum director at Bremen Public Schools (BPS), reported to the corporation’s board that they have applied to join, and been accepted into, the Indiana Literacy Cadre. This is a collaborative effort supported by the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) and the Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning (CELL) that is designed to promote literacy efforts in the state. The Cadre’s goal is to ensure that 95% of Hoosier students can read proficiently by the end of third grade. The application window closed on Feb. 28.

If everything goes as planned, BPS will receive state funds to help set up teachers to instruct in the science of reading in the classroom. “If everything falls into place, we will have a certified teacher, strictly for the next two years, just being the literacy coach in grades K-throughtwo to get people

into those foundation skills and get them really cemented into the school,” explained Hassel.

A lot of that will come through financial support. In the first year, the state will pay for two-thirds of the coach’s salary. In the second year, that will be reduced to a third, and by the third year, BPS will be on their own. “Hopefully, we can have things in place and we can keep it rolling on our own. If not, then that financial burden falls back on us,” Hassel said. As the program progresses, Hassel will continue to keep the school board informed.
