La Voz Unida continues efforts toward Driving Privilege Cards

By Jamie Fleury staff Writer

MARSHALL COUNTY — La Voz Unida, a local 501c3 organization that advocates for the rights of individuals and families, met Sunday at St. Michael’s School to update the community on progress being made toward legalizing Driving Privilege Cards.

While the bill did not pass at the State level; many towns and cities in Indiana have approved Resolutions or expressed support including Plymouth and Bremen. La Voz Unida will continue to advocate and inform.

The bill, if and when it is approved next year, would provide that an individual who is an Indiana resident and cannot provide proof of identity and lawful status in the United States may apply for a Driving Record Card Learner’s Permit and Driving Record Card to obtain driving privileges.

Those individuals would have to be a resident of the State of Indiana for at least a year and provide proof of paying taxes with a Tax Identification Number.

The bill, if passed, would ensure that all Indiana drivers are trained, certified, insured, and identifiable.

Taylor Rodriguez, a freshman at Bremen High School, advocated for the Driving Privilege Cards noting that the ability to drive legally is of great importance to individuals and families.

She told the Pilot News, “In my perspective, people need to get places that are important.” Rodriguez shared the story of a woman who’s daughter had cancer; she was unable to drive her daughter to treatments. The expense of a ticket would have been another burden on her already tight budget as she was already struggling to make ends meet. “So she had have her friends take her daughter to treatments. It’s things like that. People need to be able to drive. People are going to drive. Why not make it safe? Why not make it legal?”

La Voz Unida welcomes members of the community to join the effort. Find them on Facebook @ La Voz Unida to find out more. Meetings are held every Wednesday starting at 6 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall located at 901 East Jefferson St., Plymouth.
